Symptoms of Dog Allergies

On this website, we will be exploring two topics:  humans suffering from allergies and dogs suffering from allergies. On this page we will begin with dogs suffering from allergies, and then on further pages we will focus on humans:  pet allergies, common food allergies, food allergy symptoms, asthma and allergies, and allergy treatments.

Many people suffer from pet allergies.  Pets, such as cats and dogs have dander, which becomes airborne and can bother a person who is allergic.  Dander is especially challenging because it is difficult to get rid of.

Common food allergies include dairy, wheat, nuts, seafood, soy, eggs, shellfish, and tree nuts.  These can make eating difficult and put people suffering from these types of allergies at risk of serious reactions, including anaphylaxis.

Food allergy symptoms include runny nose, congestion, watery and red eyes, blue coloring under the eyes, difficulty breathing, and cough.

Asthma and allergies are commonly linked together as many people with asthma also suffer from allergies.  Additionally, exposure to an allergen trigger can bring on an allergic reaction.

Allergy treatments include a number of options, including bronchodilators, antihistamines, decongestants, corticosteroids, immunotherapy, and more.

We will explore each of these topics in more detail as you continue through the pages.

Dogs Suffering From Allergies

There are many kinds of dog allergies.  Just like humans, they can be divided into skin allergies, food allergies, as well as environment-induced allergies.  The symptoms of dog allergies can include eyes that become watery, sneezing, coughing, itchiness of the skin, and difficulty breathing.  Your dog may also feel weak and have a lack of energy.  He or she may vomit, have a decreased appetite, diarrhea, and an increased heart rate.  Urine can also appear dark.  Your dog's gums may also look yellow or dull.

Dogs experiencing an allergic reaction may itch themselves uncontrollably, and this can lead to sores on his body.  These sores can become infected.  You should be sure to give your dog cold baths using shampoos that include aloe vera and eucalyptus to reduce the burning. Sometimes oatmeal baths will help to relieve itching.   Remember to also clean your dog's feet.  If your dog has watery eyes and discharge from the eyes, a little boric acid opthalmic solution and visine moisturizing eye drops can be used to wipe your dog's eye across the center from the inner corner to the outer corner when the eyes are closed.

If your dog may be allergic to the food he is eating, you may be able to try a different food that will provide him with some relief.  Be sure to try the new dog food for at least one week before changing it.

If your dog is inside, make sure that you vacuum and sweep your home often to keep a clean floor.  If you must leave your dog in the bedroom, get an air cleaner.  Try to reduce the amount of dust mites in your home so that you can reduce allergies for your pet.

If you are unable to figure out the cause of your dog's allergies, then you will not be able to fix it.  It is best for you to see your dog's veterinarian, and they can help you to determine the cause and then some treatments or medications you should begin.
